If you need to mark glossy or slippery surfaces the answer might be a Chinagraph Pencil. Now called Staedtler Lumocolour Glasochrom, these pencils write on many difficult-to-mark surfaces like glass, metal and plastics. Some interesting uses are film, xrays, gardening pots, leather, stone, and they even work under water. The pigments are opaque and light colours can be used on dark backgrounds, for example white pencil on black plastic stands out quite well. Although waterproof, they can be removed with solvent.
