Oil and acrylic brushes are built to endure the more demanding nature of their mediums—acrylics can be fast-drying and abrasive, while oils often involve solvents. These brushes are stiffer than watercolour brushes and are typically made from durable hog hair or synthetic fibres, which resist wear and are easy to clean. Acrylic brushes usually have a medium firmness—supple enough for blending yet firm enough to handle thicker paint. Oil brushes tend to be even stiffer to effectively manipulate the heavy texture of oil paint. Both types generally feature long handles, allowing for greater reach and control when working at an easel, and come in a wide range of shapes to suit everything from fine detail to expressive, textured strokes.
