Posca Info Page

Uni Posca Markers are permanent acrylic paint markers, with real paint rather than traditional ink. Once dry, the paint becomes waterproof, fade-resistant, and permanent on most surfaces. Unlike alcohol markers, Poscas do not dry instantly, but artwork is usually touch dry within a few minutes. All colours are non-toxic and safe to use.

Posca colours are bold, vibrant, and instantly recognisable for their smooth, flat matte finish, a signature look unique to the Posca range. Colours remain perfectly consistent across every pen size, meaning the same blue in an ultrafine marker will match exactly with the blue in the largest tip size.

Posca Nibs

One of the great features of Posca Markers is their replaceable nibs. Every Posca marker, except the 350 Brush, Mop’r and Ultra Fine 1MR, allows you to easily swap out worn nibs for new ones. This is especially useful when working on abrasive surfaces, where nibs can wear down quite quickly.

Replacing a nib is fast and simple. Just remove the old nib, insert the new one, and gently depress it until the paint flows through and colours the fresh tip. Once activated, your marker is ready to use again. Replacement nibs are available separately, making it easy to keep your favourite Poscas performing like new.

Line Thickness

Posca Markers are available in a wide range of sizes and nib styles to suit everything from fine detail work to large-scale projects. Line widths range from a bold 15mm down to an ultra-fine 0.7mm, similar to a broad ballpoint pen. There are even brush tip options for artists who prefer expressive, paint-like strokes.

Different nib styles are suited to different applications. The Fine and Extra Fine tips are especially popular for rock painting, shoe art, and detailed hobby projects, while surfboard and skateboard artists often favour the versatile Medium Bullet Tip 5M. For signage, windows, and larger artworks, the Broad Chisel 17K and Mop’r are popular choices. Colour availability varies across the different marker sizes.

For the best performance, always shake your Posca thoroughly before use. The paint contains pigments that need to be mixed evenly with the solvent, and shaking ensures smooth, consistent colour flow and maximum marker life.

Before first use, Posca markers need to be primed. After shaking the pen well so the internal ball bearing moves freely, gently press the nib down several times until the paint begins to flow into the tip. Once primed, the marker is ready to use.

Posca markers work beautifully on a huge variety of surfaces, including metal, wood, glass, canvas, plaster, most plastics, and more. Some surfaces may benefit from priming beforehand for the best adhesion and durability. Once dry, artwork can be protected with a spray or brush-on varnish, particularly on surfaces exposed to regular wear such as skateboards or surfboards. For an ultra-glossy, under-glass finish, artwork can also be coated with a two-pack resin.

Posca artwork can even be heat-set onto ceramics and glass by baking at 160°C for approximately 45 minutes, then varnishing once cooled. On fabrics, designs can be fixed by dry ironing the reverse side of the material. It is recommended to place baking paper underneath to protect the ironing surface.

To remove Posca paint from windows or glass, use a scraper blade held at an angle to gently lift the paint away, then clean the surface with a quality window cleaner such as Windex for a clear finish.

Update

A new Posca has joined the range: the PC-5BR Brush Marker. Similar in size to the popular 5M Medium Bullet, the 5BR replaces the traditional felt tip with a flexible brush nib that allows for far more expressive mark-making.

The brush tip responds to pressure and angle, letting artists create everything from fine, delicate lines to broader paint strokes with a single marker. It’s perfect for lettering, illustration, calligraphy, manga, expressive outlines, and painterly effects that are difficult to achieve with standard marker tips.

Filled with the same highly pigmented acrylic paint Posca is famous for, the 5BR delivers vibrant, opaque colour with a smooth matte finish that becomes permanent and waterproof once dry on most surfaces. It can be used on paper, canvas, wood, glass, fabric, and many other materials, making it a versatile addition to any artist’s toolkit.
